Mongane Wally Serote is a renowned South African politician, anti-Apartheid struggle leader, a poet, playwright, cultural activist, and one of the leading African Renaissance proponents. Professor Serote is also a celebrated Fulbright literary scholar who continues to contribute tirelessly towards the achievement of the African dream; in South Africa and internationally by participating in various platforms.
The establishment of the Freedom Park “as a reminder of the liberation struggle and a beacon for future hopes”; encapsulates the essence of Serote’s vision for Africa and its people. He is also actively involved in cutting edge scientific research on African cultural heritage and indigenous knowledge management system through partnerships with local universities.
According to Serote art, memory and exploration are part of the healing and empowerment process that is needed to enable nations, depleted by conflict and the suppression of human creativity, to rediscover and uphold its/own identity against poverty, disunity and dominance by others.
To this effect, the African cultural renaissance project remains pivotal in driving the African discourse for the achievement of total emancipation of future generations. The Mongane Wally Serote Foundation is therefore a vehicle to drive this long term project. It is aimed at facilitating strategic programmes that will advance African Cultural renaissance in partnerships with similar institutions.
The Foundation shall provide a platform to promote African Renaissance by conducting awareness creation dialogues, think-tanks and research. It will also incentivize African youth entrepreneurship by supporting multinational and cross-cultural cooperation in the arts and culture sector in partnership with strategic national/ regional institutions.
